It's a Boy!

We're proud to announce the newest member of our family... Squirrely! (that's just what I've been calling him... he doesn't officially have a name yet) This is the baby squirrel that Ella found for my "birthday present". I got a little video of the kids telling all about it. These were taken a week ago- on the day we found it. His mommy didn't take him back so we still have him. He's not doing so hot right now... well, better today than yesterday, so we'll see if he makes it. He's pretty little. Poor guy. My dad took care of him while we were out of town. That just cracks me up. Thanks, Dad, for feeding Squirrely while we were gone (and buying him formula and a bottle)!
Here's Ella telling details of how she found it. Take special notice about what she thinks about everyone else having a squirrel. We'll be offering stud services when he grows up...

And here is Rohan telling about his experience with Squirrely!

And Mac... something about the combination of the camera and the baby squirrel created the baby voice! Funny guy!

Very cute! Have you looked into how the mom will respond to her baby having been with you (smell and all)... I'm just curious if they care like birds? It is very cute though... when you commented on it in your previous post I didn't imagine it being quite that much of a baby. Of course, I don't know what I was expecting.

AMEN?! Is Ro Ro the cutest or what?! I loved watching Ella intently watch the squirrel while searching for the words to say and then coaching Rohan!! Mac's baby voice was precious so enjoy it while he still uses it from time to time! Before you know it he'll be all grown up!!!

So I'm thinking that there ain't no way Squirrely's family is going to come near him after being touched. I know from experience that rabbits won't take their own back with the human smell. Plus he's way little. I say you domesticate the little dude and keep him around!! I'm telling you my neighbors had the friendliest squirrel you ever did meet after raising it!

I think it's awesome that your Dad was tenderly caring for the little guy! I so hope your new little guy lives. Keep him super warm!!!!

Love you to pieces!!

Kristin and Britta... actually, the first thing all the websites I read up on said to try was to get the mother to take back the baby. They all said squirrel mommies don't mind the human smell and they'll take the babies back. But they also said they won't take the babies back if they're cold or dehydrated... so we were warming and hydrating at the point these videos were taken. We tried putting the baby out for the mommy, but she wasn't interested. So... we've kept it! It's been pretty interesting. I have to feed it every two or three hours. He went downhill after about Friday and he almost died yesterday from starvation more or less. He just wasn't eating well. So, we started force feeding him and he's doing MUCH better today. He IS very small indeed. We love him! (and don't worry Britt... he's living in a box on top of a heating pad so he's very warm!) :) I would love to have our friendly little squirrel bring us funny stories when he gets bigger and can live out in the trees with his squirrelly little friends!

And yes, Roh Roh is ABSOLUTELY the cutest! Don't you just love the amen! I was pretty excited that we caught that on camera... although he probably wouldn't have said it if the camera wasn't there because he wouldn't be telling the story under camera pressure which makes you want to say something at the end to let everyone know that it IS the end! Funny, sweet boy!

My dad found a baby flying squirrel running in circles in the street when he was little. They built a cage for it and fed it with a medicine dropper until it was big enough for other things. It used to climb up the curtains and fly to his shoulder, and was definately attached to my dad over his SIX other siblings. However, his cousin was over one day and let it out of the cage and never put it back when he was done playing with it and they found "Rocky" (get it, from Rocky and Bullwinkle? Rocky was the flying squirrel LOL) drowned in the toilet...

I hope the squirrel does well! Have you contacted a nature place? They'd probably have some good tips on what to do!
